January 2005 Newsletter
CEDEI
The Community Arts School begins the New Year with an expanded syllabus of classes, including Black and White Photography (a darkroom is presently being constructed), jewelry making, music and song, and theater, along with new cycles of last year's successes, the courses in painting, digital photography, Latin American dance, animation, puppet-making and Asian breathing methods.
Thirteen new teachers start in our English Department for the new cycle of English classes on January 10.
Intersession
Our latest batch of 50 Intersession students has arrived safely in Cuenca, after an action-packed few days traveling from the heat and iguanas of Guayaquil to mountains and guinea pigs of Gualaceo, and finally to Cuenca, where they were united with their homestay families.
The students were straight to work, beginning classes the following morning, followed by a tour of the city and the new CEDEI building. The pace won't let up over the next few weeks, with trips to Ingapirca and Cajas, classes in dance and ceramics, visits to museums and a hat factory, all in the itinerary.
Finally, they will fly to capital city Quito to tour the historic center, straddle the Equator and visit the famous Otavalo craft market. The adventure ends there for St Ambrose students, but Salisbury still have the prospect of a few days on the beach at Canoa to work on their tans before heading home.
Semester in the Andes
Enrolment for the first half of our Semester in the Andes has ended, with 8 nervous students preparing themselves for a truly in-depth cultural and academic experience.
Medical Spanish in Ecuador
Commencing on February 13, 2005, our Medical Spanish in Ecuador Program is designed to meet the needs of the growing number of medical students, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and EMTs who need practical Spanish vocabulary to communicate effectively with patients. The program is also designed, wherever possible, to satisfy the requirements of Continuing Education Units. For more information check out our website at http://www.cedei.org/medical/.
Spanish Volunteer Immersion (SIVP) and Full Immersion Spanish Program (FISP)
Enrolment for our flexible, individually tailored programs has been strong for January, with many obviously anxious to blow away the post-Christmas blues by either pitting their wits against the Spanish language in our intensive FISP program or getting involved in the community of Cuenca through voluntary work (with language classes also) in the SIVP program. We are always happy to welcome more individual students, who never fail to bring their own unique personalities to the table. For details on the programs and how to come and join us here in Ecuador, go to http://www.cedei.org/programs/.
